    CIT Robbery: Thokhoza Robbery
In a dramatic turn of events in Thokoza, Gauteng, a brazen cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery attempt ended in disaster for one of the suspects, who lost a leg following a failed explosion. The incident occurred on the morning of May 6, 2025, at the busy intersection of Khumalo and Murubisi Streets in Phola Park Extension 5.

According to eyewitnesses and police reports, a silver BMW collided with a Fidelity armored cash van in an apparent effort to bring it to a halt. Moments later, a group of armed suspects emerged and attempted to use explosives to breach the vehicleโ€™s heavily fortified cargo area. However, the plan went terribly wrong. (1)

    Robbery suspect loses leg
During the detonation process, one of the suspects was caught too close to the blast. The resulting explosion caused catastrophic injuries, severing one of his legs on the spot. Panic erupted among the gang as the injured man screamed in agony, and the group quickly abandoned the robbery, fleeing the scene in multiple vehicles.
    Failed CIT heist
Despite their efforts, the suspects were unable to access the cash inside the van. Emergency services arrived shortly after the attempted heist, only to find scattered body parts everywhere.
Authorities are now intensifying efforts to locate and apprehend the members of the gang. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has appealed to the public for any information that could lead to arrests, emphasizing that CIT robberies are not only a threat to the safety of security personnel but also to innocent bystanders.
